Canton Fair 2026: Getting to Guangzhou from Australia
The Canton Fair is China's biggest trade fair, and Guangzhou is a direct flight from both Sydney and Melbourne. Here is what Australian buyers need to know before booking.
If your business sources product from China, or you are thinking about starting, the Canton Fair in Guangzhou is the event the trade is built around. It runs twice a year, and the autumn 2026 session is coming up with a Sydney and Melbourne connection that makes it more reachable than a lot of buyers realise.
Autumn 2026 dates and the three phases
The 140th China Import and Export Fair, better known as the Canton Fair, runs in three phases across three weeks in October and November 2026, at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Pazhou, Guangzhou:
- Phase 1, Advanced Manufacturing: 15-19 October. Electronics and home appliances, new energy vehicles, industrial automation and machinery.
- Phase 2, Quality Home Life: 23-27 October. Building materials, furniture, housewares, gifts and decorations, and fashion jewellery.
- Phase 3, Better Life: 31 October to 4 November. Health and recreation, toys, baby and maternity products, fashion, and medical and healthcare products.
There is no exhibition on 20-22 October or 28-30 October, between the phases. If your sourcing interest sits across more than one phase, most buyers either pick the phase that matches their main category or plan a longer stay to cover two.
Getting to Guangzhou from Sydney and Melbourne
This is where the trip is more straightforward than a lot of Australian buyers expect. China Southern flies direct between both Sydney and Guangzhou, and Melbourne and Guangzhou. For a trip built around a specific set of fair days, a direct flight into Guangzhou's Baiyun International Airport removes one whole layer of connection risk from your schedule.
Current visa rules for Australian passport holders
China's visa-free policy for Australians is genuinely useful here. As of this check (checked 28 September 2026, against the Chinese Embassy in Canberra's own notice), Australian ordinary passport holders can enter mainland China without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges and transit. This visa-free arrangement has been extended through to 31 December 2026.
This covers standard Canton Fair attendance as a buyer, since "business" purposes are explicitly included. It does not cover every possible reason for travel, and diplomatic or official passport holders are excluded from the arrangement, so if your situation is anything other than a straightforward business or buying trip, it is worth confirming your own circumstances against the embassy's current notice before you book. Visa rules can and do change, so treat this as accurate at the time of writing and reconfirm closer to your travel date.
Registering as a buyer
Canton Fair registration for overseas buyers is handled online and, for first-time visitors, at no cost. The process runs through the Canton Fair's own Buyer Service System: you register an account with your name, company details, country and sourcing interest, then apply for the Overseas Buyer Badge and the fair invitation through the same system. Confirmation typically comes back within a few business days of applying, so it is worth starting this well before you fly rather than leaving it to arrival.
The badge itself is collected in person, either at the fair complex in Pazhou or at one of the Overseas Buyers' Registration Offices set up in hotels around Guangzhou during the fair. Pre-registering online before you travel is what lets you use the faster collection channels rather than queuing at the main complex on your first morning.
Practical tips for Australian buyers
A few things make a first Canton Fair trip smoother. Book your flights and accommodation as early as you reasonably can, hotels in Guangzhou fill up fast during fair weeks and prices move with demand. Bring plenty of business cards and be ready to hand them out constantly, it is still very much how introductions happen on the floor. Plan your days around the phase and product categories that actually match what you are sourcing rather than trying to cover all three phases in one trip unless you genuinely need to. And build in some buffer time around the fair itself for factory visits or follow-up meetings, since a lot of the real business happens in the days either side of the halls being open.
